SCHOOLHOUSE #12

 

Standing at the corner of King Church Avenue and Lake Center Street, Schoolhouse No. 12 is one of Lake Township’s most treasured historic landmarks. Established circa 1850, the one-room schoolhouse served generations of local students during an era when a single teacher taught all eight grades under one roof. Architecturally, the building is an excellent example of vernacular design with Greek Revival influences and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.  

 

In 2003, the Lake Township Historical Society completed a major Ohio Bicentennial restoration project that returned the schoolhouse to its historic appearance and ensured its preservation for future generations. The project was truly a community effort, made possible through the generosity of volunteers, donors, contractors, and local businesses who contributed countless hours, materials, and financial support.  

 

Among those making significant contributions was Howard Miller Sr., who donated the materials and labor necessary to remove deteriorated rafters and roofing and install a new roof. The work was carried out by Paul Yoder and his associates. In total, more than 20 contractors and suppliers donated labor, materials, or both to help restore this important piece of Lake Township history.  

 

Today, Schoolhouse No. 12 offers visitors a glimpse into 19th-century education and serves as a reminder of the community’s commitment to preserving its heritage.
